I’ve always had a thing for typography. Maybe it comes from spending most of my career building identity systems, but I’ve always felt type can say just as much about a brand as the logo itself. Sometimes more.

Before you ever read the words, the type has already said something.

It can make a brand feel established, modern, approachable, expensive, playful or completely unexpected. Get it right and it becomes one of those subtle things people begin to recognize without even realizing it.

That’s becoming more important.

There’s more good design in the world than ever before. We have better tools, more typefaces, endless inspiration and now AI capable of producing polished creative almost instantly.

But there’s also a lot of sameness.

Scroll through enough brand launches and you start seeing it. Similar type. Similar layouts. Similar photography. Similar color palettes. Everything is beautifully designed, but sometimes you could swap the logos and barely notice.

That’s a problem.

At ODCo, I’ve always approached identity from the opposite direction. Strip away what you don’t need and figure out what actually makes the brand recognizable.

Sometimes that’s a mark. Sometimes it’s color or photography. Sometimes it’s the way the brand speaks.

And sometimes it’s type.

A typeface doesn’t have to be custom or overly complicated to become distinctive. It can be something as simple as the way it’s used. The scale. The weight. The spacing. How headlines are treated. How a handful of elements consistently work together.

Do it long enough and those little decisions start becoming recognizable.

That’s when design starts becoming identity.

I think that matters even more as AI becomes part of the everyday creative process. The tools are going to keep getting faster and the barrier to producing something that looks professionally designed is going to keep getting smaller.

That doesn’t make good designers less important.

It makes having a point of view more important.

Because making something look good has never really been the hardest part.

Making something feel like it could only belong to that brand is.

That’s what we’re always chasing at ODCo.

Find what makes the brand different. Get rid of the noise. Build around the things worth owning.

And keep it simple.

If your brand is starting to feel like everything else out there, maybe it’s time to take a closer look at what makes it yours. At O’Dell Design Co., we build simple, distinctive identity systems designed to be recognized and remembered. Let’s build something people know is yours before they ever see the logo.
